Mersey Skill Training Inc is a not-for-profit community business incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act 1964 and holds charity status. The organisation commenced operations in 1989 as a Community Youth Support Services (CYSS) provider with 4.5 full-time equivalent staff.
In 1990 the organisation became a leading Tasmanian Skill Share provider delivering vocational skill development to Jobseekers, on behalf of the Federal Government. With the advent of the Working Nation series of labour market programmes, introduced by the then Federal Labour Government, Mersey Skill Training Inc extended its scope of operations to deliver such programmes as Job Skills, Landcare Environment Action Programme, New Work Opportunities, Job Club and various other minor programmes. Whilst, through the delivery of these programmes, the organisation established and maintained significant working relationships with industry, historically, energies were focused on two primary target groups – Jobseekers and Government.
The demise of the Working Nation labour market programmes and the subsequent introduction of the Job Network in May 1998 marked a change in Federal Government policy and a dramatic shift in the core focus of Mersey Skill Training Inc. These changes lead to the elevation of the importance of industry to the future success of the organisation. Simultaneously, the introduction of a rigorous accreditation process for Registered Training Organisations reinforced these changing relationships with industry. The organisation has decisively attained and implemented the competencies required to identify and understand the needs of industry and the business world in which they operate.
Mersey Skill Training Inc currently delivers two (2) broad categories of services to the Tasmanian community – training and development services and employment services. The 2 categories of services are delivered under the trading banners of MST Workplace Solutions and JobNet Tasmania respectively.
